Blizzard Entertainment, 1994
After Westwood started the real time strategy genre with the space-themed
Dune 2, Blizzard expanded the genre with their fantasy RTS Warcraft. As
was typical in those days, each faction is rather similar aside from their
appearance. By todays standards the game's controls are severely flawed:
a maximum of 4 units can be selected at a time, and cannot be assigned a
number. What's worse is that each time you want a unit to go somewhere,
the move command must be given by a click on the move button on the menu bar.
Aside from the multiplayer aspect, the most profound innovation in the
RTS genre initiated with Warcraft are the variety of levels. Not all levels
revolve around building a base, training as many troops as possible, and
destroying all opposition; in some levels you start with a small number of
troops to overtake an enemy's base, while others are situated indoors.
Despite all its flaws Warcraft 1 is still a fun game, worthwile to
check out and see where the franchise originated. Even the intro
foreshadows many things to come; it ends with the words: "Welcome to the
world of Warcraft."
