Castle Zhagwhar Frenkel » 30-Sep-2009
This is probably the last update of this site. For this update I bring you Castle Zhagwhar. It's a game for the TRS-80 Color Computer created by Keith Schuler in 1987 and published in the June 1989 issue of the Rainbow magazine. Not much can be found on the Internet about Castle Zhagwhar, but most people say it's the first game of a trilogy in which Chagunitzu and Paganitzu are the second and third ones. Now that I've played Castle Zhagwhar in the Vcc emulator, I can state that this is not the case. Chagunitzu and Paganitzu are both puzzle games starring Alabama Smith. Castle Zhagwhar is a platform game similar to Jumpman and it stars Gwydion. The only similarity I could find between these games is that in all of them the player must collect items before he can advance to the next level.

The Castle Zhagwhar zip file contains a disk image of Castle Zhagwhar, which can be used in Vcc. It also contains the original Basic source code listing of this game, which was published over 20 years ago in the Rainbow magazine.

It's September 2009 and I still haven't found the Dutch DOS game Octopus, released by B & C on 26-Sep-1988.

Maps of The Catacomb Frenkel » 17-Jul-2009
I've generated maps of all the levels in Catacomb II. I might do the maps of Catacomb I later. Why did I do Catacomb II before Catacomb I? Because the graphics in Catacomb II are easier to find because they are in a seperate data file, while the graphics of Catacomb I are inside the main executable. The maps are on our Catacomb page.

Michael Jackson (1958-2009) Frenkel » 28-Jun-2009
Michael Jackson just died. He's best known for his music, but he has also played in a couple of movies. Moonwalker is such a movie and it's also the name of a computer game that's based on the movie of the same name. The game has four levels and I've created maps of all of them. The maps are on our Moonwalker page.

Wolfenstein-Adrian-Liberation-Day Frenkel » 05-May-2009
Today, 64 years ago the Netherlands were liberated from the Nazi occupation during World War II. It's a coincidence that on the same day in 1992 Wolfenstein 3D was released. One of the creators of that game is Adrian Carmack. He celebrates his 40th birthday today. In one of the help screens of the shareware version of Wolf3D, he says:

"Okay, now for the CGA version . . . NOT!"

To celebrate all these events I have created a demo of what the CGA version of Wolfenstein 3D could have looked like. The demo is at our Wolfenstein 3D page.

Today, it's 16 years ago when Monster Bash version 1.0 was released. If you read this on 10-Apr-2009, it's 16 years ago when Monster Bash version 1.01 was released. And if you read this on 12-Apr-2009, it's 16 years ago when Monster Bash version 1.02 was released. To celebrate these events I've created a page about Monster Bash. Most of the hex cheats contents on that page was discovered by Malvineous, thanks!

Today, the movie Monty Python's Life of Brian is shown for the first time after a 30-year ban in Aberystwyth, Great Britain. To celebrate this event, I've created a page for Monty Python's Flying Circus, containing a cheat that is available for the first time on the Internet.

Apogee Stuff For Free Frenkel » 27-Mar-2009
3D Realms has released a bunch of their old Apogee games for free, including Dark Ages and Monuments of Mars. Another game that is released as freeware is the Kroz series. I helped a bit with this release and I was given the honor to write a couple of sentences for the Readme.txt file. I've copied the result to our Kroz page.

Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure is an old Apogee game that is still for sale. The cheats on the official Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure Cheats page are not complete. I've put a cheat to end the game real quick on our Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure page.

Major Cheats Frenkel » 14-Mar-2009
Today it's 3 years ago when Major Stryker got released as freeware. To celebrate this I've updated our Major Stryker page for the second time this year. This update involves the cheats for Major Stryker. It turns out the cheats for Major Stryker that can be found everywhere on the Internet, including on the official Major Stryker Cheats page, are incomplete. I've found more cheats and I've published them on this website.

Angry PC Speaker NerdFrenkel » 15-Feb-2009
There are a lot of covers of the Angry Video Game Nerd theme song available on the Internet. So I wanted to create one too. I could have played the song on the piano, record that and put it on YouTube. But there are already a couple of piano covers there. Instead, I recreated the song in Trixter's Monotone. That's a tracker for extremely simple sound devices, like the PC speaker.

AVGN Theme PC speaker version

If you want to listen to the song through your own PC speaker, download Monotone from the Monotone website and download AVGN.zip from this website.

Update 27-Jun-2020: Years ago, I've created more songs with Monotone and put them on YouTube. Due to popular demand, they can now be downloaded from here: Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit, Het refrein van het Koningslied and Slayer - Raining Blood.

Also in 2009, I'm still looking for the Dutch DOS game Octopus, released by B & C on 26-Sep-1988.

Update 27-Jun-2020: I'm still looking for Octopus.

Happy New Year Frenkel » 08-Feb-2009
Happy New Year! You probably know that Duke Nukem 1 borrowed images from Mega Man and Turrican, and Duke Nukem 2 borrowed from Turrican and Savage. Well, Duke Nukem 1 and 2 aren't the only Apogee games that borrowed artwork from other games. Major Stryker is another one. It copied art from the shoot 'em up game Sidewinder. The evidence is at our Major Stryker page.

Happy New Year Frenkel » 16-Feb-2008
Happy New Year to everybody. To start of this year with something completely different than usual I have a question for you. I am looking for a game I used to have on a floppy disk that I can't read anymore. I have asked for this game at the Dos Games Forum like I'm supposed to do according to our Guestbook and Contact page, but I didn't get any response.

The game I'm looking for is called Octopus. It was released on 26-Sep-1988 by B & C. (This could be B & C Automatiseringsdiensten, but I'm not sure.) It's an action game for DOS in Dutch with ASCII graphics. I can't remember much of this game, but I do remember that it was a fun game containing mini-games and sometimes the words "back 2 base" would appear on the screen.

If you have Octopus or if you remember this game, please contact us.

Christmas Time Sander » 24-Dec-2007
It's the time of year to say "Merry Christmas everybody !!".  For my yearly contribution I've created a little script that adds a Christmas themed box to the menu, showcasing our Secret Agent mod.  The nice thing about the script is that it checks for the date, so come Easter I don't have to pay any attention :).  Calculating just when it's Easter is a difficult matter though...  Enjoy the holiday.

Cheat the Oscar Frenkel » 04-Oct-2007
Trolls isn't the only game that Flair Software made.  They also made Oscar, which uses the same engine as Trolls. It turns out that what I've found in Trolls also works in Oscar.  It looks like the guys at Flair Software are fans of Quentin Tarantino, but they don't know how to spell the name of one of his movies right.

Go to our Oscar page.

Cheat the Trolls Frenkel » 30-Sep-2007
I've read on the Trolls trivia page at MobyGames the following:

This message can be found in the program executable:

"This game was written on a very slow schneider 10mhz 286 with lots of wait states.  If for some reason on your very fast xxxx 25mh 486 this game seems to be fast or unplayable, do no blame us for it was a penny pinching boss who would not buy us reasonable pc's to work on.  signed THE PROGRAMMERS OF FLAIR SOFTWARE"

I've tried to find a way to see this message without using a hex editor, but I didn't found that.  I did find something else...

Go to our Trolls page.

Cheat the Taito, Part VI Frenkel » 08-Aug-2007
Part 6 of our series of cheats for Taito games is about Renegade.  Get the cheats for Renegade at our Renegade page.

This is the final part of our series of cheats for Taito games.  I've announced to publish cheats for Qix, but I won't, because I don't know them.  All I know is that Qix opens the file BETATEST.DAT and reads the first 15 bytes from that file.  But I don't know what those 15 bytes should be or whether they are used and whether there really are cheats in Qix.  If you do, contact us.

Cheat the Taito, Part 1 Frenkel » 15-Jul-2007
Some time ago, I was looking with the DOSBox debugger which files are needed to play Operation Wolf.  I saw the game tried to open BETA.DAT. After some research it turned out William Rieder, the programmer of the DOS version of Operation Wolf, has put some cheats and an easter egg in Operation Wolf.  I've found out how to activate the cheats, but not how to activate the easter egg.  Get the cheats and more information about the easter egg at our Operation Wolf page.

After some more research I found out there are more Taito games that have cheats which are activated in a similar way as the cheats in Operation Wolf.  There is even a game William Rieder wrote for Sierra On-Line that has cheats which are also activated through a BETA.DAT file. I will publish the cheats for Bubble Bobble, Puzznic, Qix, Rambo III, Renegade and Oil's Well soon, so stay tuned.
